Prince William, who is visiting South Africa for a solo four-day visit, kicked off his trip with a meaningful event.

The Prince of Wales started the 10-year initiative, Earthshot Prize Award back in 2020 to find practical solutions to save the planet as climate change picks up rapid speed.

Kensington Palace on Monday shared a video of William surrounded by children and old acquaintances as he played rugby with students from Ocean View, Masiphumelele and Langa Townships.

In the clip, the principal of the school, Andrew Sanders revealed how The Atas Foundation charity, also responsible for hosting William at the school, shared how the charity utilised the empty ground to start something productive for the children.

“The field where we are standing on now was previously rough terrain, it was laying dormant but then we were approached by Atlas [saying] they’d like to come and invest,” Sanders shared.

He added that the charity wanted to assist them into “changing the field” and turn it into a place for the kids, especially the ones living in poverty, to play.

The video clip also shared an interaction between William and former rugby player, Tendai ‘The Beast’ Mtawarira, with whom he met in 2014.

Prince William is understood to take on 11 engagements during his South Africa tour, concluding with the Earthshot Prize Award ceremony on November 6th, 2024.
